For most Kiwis, camping means getting back to basics, connecting with nature and enjoying some good old-fashioned family time. And here in New Zealand we’re more blessed than most when it comes to campgrounds – we have some of the cleanest and most beautifully located in the world.
We’ve put together some of our favourite spots to lay down our heads – whether it’s pitching a tent on the grass or next to the sand.
Tauranga Bay Holiday Park, Northland
Popular for its beach location, this holiday park in Northland is enjoyed by both Kiwis and tourists, but don’t let the crowd put you off. Camping right on the beach means you can enjoy killer views as soon as you wake – and the sound of the sea.
Urupukapuka Bay Campsite, Northland
Set in the stunning surrounds of the Bay of Islands, this family friendly campground is perfectly positioned. With the beautiful greens of the rolling hills, and the aquamarine of the sea, you’ll feel as if you’re in paradise. Find out more about the site here.
Hahei Holiday Resort, Coromandel
This has been one of our firm favourites for years. Hidden behind the sand dunes of Hahei beach is this wonderful holiday resort, complete with plenty of accommodation options. Pitch your tent, bunk up in a cabin or go all out in one of the villa or bungalows available. There’s nothing quite like dashing out of your cabin to catch the sunrise on Hahei beach, or spending a day chilling on the white sand. Find out more about the site here.
Okiwi Bay Holiday Park & Lodge, Marlborough
On the western side of the Marlborough Sounds, facing Tasman Bay, is this small scale holiday park – the perfect location for a relaxed holiday. With great diving, fishing and scalloping – it’s great for those who want to feast on the delicacies of the sea.Find out more about the site here.
Do you have a campsite favourite of your own? We’d love to hear about it. Let us know via our Facebook page here.
Old Macdonalds Farm Holiday Park, Abel Tasman
In a farm setting with tame animals roaming free – this is a pretty cool spot for taking young and old. Situated alongside the Marahau river, there are ample swimming holes for a dip on a hot day, plus kayaks to hire, a water taxi available and plenty of help with hiking routes. Still family owned – we think this is pretty special. Find out more about the site here.
Millers Flat Holiday Park, Central Otago
Millers Flat, tipped as the “gateway to Central Otago” is consistently rated highly by visitors, who enjoy this traditional Kiwi holiday park on the banks of the Clutha River. Find out more about the site here.
