Tried and tested: Does the new Dyson Airstrait live up to the hype?

Our beauty editor put this new (but nostalgic) tool to the test.

Oh, beauty trends… they come and they go, don’t they? For a while there it was all about the big bouncy blowouts, thanks to tools like the Dyson Airwrap and Shark FlexStyle. When it came to hair, the bigger was better. But all trends come back around. This season, smooth straight locks are back in – but preferably without the sizzling heat damage we all used to suffer the first time around.

Enter hot air straightening tools, like the new Dyson Airstrait, and the GHD Duet Hot Air Styler. Both use the power of directional hot airflow to dry and straighten wet hair as it passes through.

Do they do what they say on the tin? Our beauty editor Anna Lee put the Dyson Airstrait through its paces to find out.

Anna’s Dyson Airstrait review

“To be honest I thought I’d hate it. It reminded me of those old wet-to-dry hair straighteners that used to fry your hair  in the early 2000s.”

To test it, she first put through a squeeze of the Dyson pre-style cream and gave her roots a quick blow dry with the Dyson Airstraight root dry mode.

First impressions? “This machine is clever. It senses when hair is between the arms and automatically drops to a low airflow when it’s not being used.”

The root-dry mode worked so well, it was too dry to trial the straightening function properly. So in the interest of investigative journalism, Anna wet her hair her hair root to tip and happily started again.

Pros: The Airstrait combines two steps in one by drying and styling at the same time, using super high-powered hair flow instead of hot plates That means minimal heat damage.

Cons: The machine wasn’t super efficient at getting those tiny baby hairs close to the scalp – those might need a going over with a smaller straightening tool.

Verdict: “I was actually impressed – my worries about heat damage were disproven. It delivered the perfect smooth and straight but still natural finish”.

Where can I buy the Dyson Airstraight?

The Dyson Airstrait is available on the Dyson NZ website for $799.
