Sydney based cake queen Katherine Sabbath is a well-loved baker who has earned herself a large and loyal following on social media in recent years – her latest undertaking is a spot competing on Dessert Masters.
We’re getting to know her better before we watch her on our screens!
How do you feel about being judged for your creations?
It’s always a momentous thing embarking on a challenge that’s completely new to you, then seeing that play out on television. It’s really exciting, but a little bit daunting too.
You’ve been a guest cook on MasterChef. Do you still get nervous on telly?
I always am nervous when there are so many eyes on me. When I bake at home, I’ve got my podcast on, I can listen to music, I can snack and I can cook at my own pace. When people are watching me, there’s always that pressure to keep to time and make sure I’m doing things methodically. And cutting cakes on camera is always nerve-racking – I feel like my hands don’t know what they’re doing! I knew this was going to be quite the challenge, especially being a home baker and not classically trained.
Where do you get your inspo for your incredible creations?
I had a stutter growing up and that scared me away from making friends, so getting to know people in social situations was daunting. But if I arrived at a party with a cake or a big plate of caramel slice, that’s such a good way to make friends and break the ice! It’s so different to cooking savoury foods. You cook savoury foods because you need to eat to survive, but treats are always something you do because you love it and it’s designed to be shared.
Do you hope your two-year-old daughter Zee inherits your love of baking?
Yes, I hope so and also that she’s not afraid to express herself – and if something doesn’t go to plan, she can adapt. I bake because it’s fun and if it’s not fun, then I don’t want to do it, so I try not to put too much pressure on myself and I hope she picks that up too. I hope she always wants to feed people!
Obviously, you love your desserts, but are you more of a savoury or sweet person?
Sweet! But my problem is, if someone offered me a cheese platter or dessert, I’d have both!
