MAFS NZ bride Kara Lester was rattled when she laid eyes on her groom’s unique facial hair. However, Michael Wilson says his first impression of his bride was a good one. He recalls, “Seeing her step up to the altar, I was like, ‘Look at this beautiful woman!’ Kara is amazing. She’s so courageous.”
Instead, the part that made him nervous was their first night together. Mike laughs, “I’d never been married before and I’d just met this person. Then producers threw us into the honeymoon suite without any lead-up. Do we sleep in the same bed? How do I create a calm and safe environment?”
Making no apologies for his larger-than-life persona, Mike adds, “I always got told off for being too loud, too this or too that, but I’ve been on a big, deep journey of self over the past seven years and now I like who I am. It’s the version of me that I used to hide away from the world.”
Having come third on The Apprentice Aotearoa in 2021, Mike is already eyeing up a return to MAFS, no matter how his marriage to Kara turns out. He says, “If I was to do this again, I’d love to come back as an expert and help the couples communicate better.”
