New Zealand celebrities are lending their support to help raise awareness for World Sight Day. An annual event, World Sight Day helps raise awareness for blindness and vision impairment both here and overseas.
Shortland Street star Frankie Adams, and TV presenters Carly Flynn and Renee Wright have all posted photos of themselves to their Facebook pages raising a flag in support of the global campaign.
Carly says she still remembers the first time she wore prescription glasses at the age of eight.
“To this day I still remember that moment when I put my glasses on and saw what other people saw. I couldn’t believe the detail and beauty of everything around me… Being someone who once had very poor eyesight, I can’t tell you how thankful I am to have improved vision, and to this day I never take my, nor my family’s eye health for granted.”
Optometrist and Essilor NZ general manager Thomas Martin says many Kiwis are not fully aware of the impact that poor eye health can have on those around us.
“Poor eye health has a significant impact on our daily lives – it’s believed nearly 60% of traffic accidents internationally may be related to poor vision, and one in three workers in the world is living with an uncorrected vision problem.”
Thomas encourages Kiwis to take head and book an eye test with their local optometrist.
